During this unprecedented public health emergency, Beaverton Schools district has been following the guidance of the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services and the Central Michigan Health Department. As we continue planning for the 2020-2021 school year, it's important for us to hear from you. We invite you to take a few minutes to complete this parent/guardian survey to help guide our planning to safely reopen schools during this public health emergency. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1pneGX326bqZ89g4z81aTgI5U9At4Vs4TAURNu6e3_pw/edit?ts=5f05f903 As part of the MI Safe Schools Return to School Roadmap, Beaverton Schools has developed a committee of stakeholders to assist in the development and revision of our Return To Learn Plan. This committee will be discussing the critical components that will be necessary to ensure success of learning within our district while ensuring the health and safety of our students and staff. We want everyone to be aware that we will have an option for our families if they choose a distance learning option. We have partnered with Founders Academy to offer a distance learning option for our families. More information to follow. We look forward to hearing from you. #GoBeavers

We have some changes to our Class of 2020 Commencement ceremony. Our commencement plans are impacted by the different phases of the governor's reopening plan. Gladwin County is part of Region 4 and our region is currently listed in Phase 4 of the reopening plan. We plead with everyone to please be understanding. We waited as long as possible before finalizing these decisions.

To the Beaverton community, Late Tuesday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer released the MI Safe Schools Return to Schools Roadmap, a 63 page document with comprehensive guidance to help local school districts create plans for in-person learning this fall. Additionally, Governor Whitmer announced the signing of Executive Order 2020-142 which provides guidance on developing “Preparedness Plans”. The MI Safe Schools Return to School Roadmap offers guidelines as to the types of safety protocols that will be required or recommended at each phase. The safety protocols detailed in the Roadmap includes guidance on the use of personal protection equipment (PPE), good hygiene, cleaning/disinfecting, spacing in classrooms, screening for symptoms, athletics, and more. The Roadmap also recognizes the impact COVID-19 has had on students’ and educators’ mental health and offers guidance on how schools can address this issue. At the same time, Dr. Michael Rice, Michigan State Superintendent said, “Congress needs to approve additional federal aid so that children’s education is not harmed in a pandemic. This additional federal aid needs to include not simply funding to make up for lost state aid in the pandemic, but also funding to address personal protection equipment and catch-up learning in the pandemic.” Obviously, there’s a lot of information in the roadmap. The administrative team met yesterday morning to begin working on our three different plans. Also, the local superintendents met yesterday to continue dialogue around the implementation of these plans for all districts within this region. All districts are faced with a difficult challenge, yet we are navigating unchartered waters. At this time, we do not have all of the answers, but we are working tirelessly to finalize our plans for the return in the Fall. Respectfully, Joseph Passalacqua The 63 page document can be found below. https://www.michigan.gov/documents/whitmer/MI_Safe_Schools_Roadmap_FINAL_695392_7.pdf

Undoubtedly, many of you probably watched the press conference today, but if you didn’t the high level takeaway is that Gov. Whitmer announced that if your region is in Phase 4 of the MI Safe Start plan, in-person instruction may go forward with strict, with mandatory health and safety protocols which will be defined in the Roadmap for Return to Learn. We expect that roadmap to be released on or around June 30th. The Return to School plan will align closely with the MI Safe Start Plan. The governor will consider the six phases of the MI Safe Start Plan and the Michigan Economic Recover Council’s 8 regions of the state to determine when, where, and how face-to-face instruction can resume. Districts, students, staff, and families must be nimble and be prepared to move backwards if there is evidence of community spread of the virus. The Roadmap will set the minimum health and safety requirements, although districts may choose to enact more aggressive ones in consultation with local public health officials. These minimum requirements will apply to all schools, including traditional public, charter, private, and parochial schools. The governor also acknowledged that her top priority for budget would be to preserve K-12 funding recognizing that the protocols necessary for a safe return to school will require additional expenditures. While this is a welcome sentiment, it’s a monumental task given the shortfalls we face.

Beaverton Schools is holding a Community Forum ZOOM meeting on Wednesday, May 13, 2020@ 3:30pm. So much has changed since Gov. Whitmer released her proposed budget for 2020-2021 in February. There have been so many significant changes over the past months and the reality is, the budget we will adopt this year will be vastly different from the one we had planned to adopt pre-pandemic. During this meeting, we will address the current landscape of education. All information will be fluid at this point and subject to change after the May 15th Revenue Consensus. Public comment will be taken in to advisement.  Stakeholders that join the meeting may pose questions in the chat for our administration team to take in to consideration as we are adjusting and finalizing next year's budget.  Topic: Community Forum Budget Zoom Meeting Time: May 13, 2020 03:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) https://us04web.zoom.us/j/72184870397?pwd=OHJzYkZBYWxJOGpMbHlvS20zdVFMUT09 Meeting ID: 721 8487 0397 Password: 0Ux4uN Hope to see your faces on May 13th.

As a result of COVID-19 and the closing of school buildings for the 2019-2020 School Year, school districts must submit a Continuity of Learning and COVID-19 Response Plan (“Plan”) in order to continue to receive state aid for operations. Although schools are closed and not providing in-person instruction, teaching and learning must continue. Michigan educators have been called to provide our students with continued learning. The document attached here helps explain a small portion of our learning plan. Also, it indicates where people can find information to help answer any difficult questions that may have come up. MHSAA Cancels Remainder of 2019-20 Winter & Spring Season EAST LANSING, Mich. – April 3 – The Michigan High School Athletic Association has canceled the remainder of the 2019-20 Winter and Spring sports seasons, in compliance with the Thursday (April 2) “state of disaster” directive by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer closing school buildings and moving education online for the remainder of the school year to help decrease the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. This will be the first school year to not see MHSAA Finals played in multiple sports since 1942-43, when World War II led to the elimination of Finals in most sports. We are thinking of our student-athletes, parents, coaches and fans. GO RED!

If you are perplexed, you feel confused and slightly worried by something because you do not understand it. Well, you are NOT alone. We anxiously await the Governor's executive order tomorrow as it pertains to K-12 schooling. I can give you my assurance that Beaverton staff is working hard on learning plans for our students with the potential that we will not return to school for the remainder of the year. We are anticipating that the Governor's announcement tomorrow will provide some answers to the questions that you may have. However, we will still need to adjust on a day to day and week to week basis. These are some unprecedented times. Here are just a few questions: What will “instruction” look like over the next couple of months? What will happen with the senior class? Will there be a graduation? When will it be held? Will I be promoted to the next grade? Will districts receive school funding for the remainder of this year? And the questions go on, and on, and on. Please be patient and plan to be contacted by our staff so that we may try to assist each and every one of our community members. #GoBeavers

Friday, February 7, 2020 To all Parents/Guardians, Lockdown training This post is to inform you about a lockdown training that we had this morning. Our schools are committed to the safety and education of all our students. We also want to clearly communicate with parents about safety issues when they arise. Today’s lockdown was just a drill. Lockdown procedures were followed and the police were involved. This was a collaborative effort between the schools, the Beaverton & Gladwin City Police Department and Gladwin County Police Department. Sometimes, secure mode and/or lockdown situations can frighten students. Please discuss this situation with your children and let us know if follow-up is needed at school. Thank you for your understanding. Please feel free to call either building if you have any questions or concerns. Sincerely, Joseph Passalacqua Superintendent
