A FAIR FIELD AND NO FAVOR: The BES PTO does great work for our school year-round, but the annual PTO Spring Field Day is a direct, bright, loud reminder of its impact. Today, BES kids took over Metzger Field with running, jumping and seemingly every fun activity you could imagine. Make no mistake: We have no shortage of fun from August through May, but nothing inspires more smiles than this special day. #ThankYouPTO #GoBeavers
ENDINGS...AND BEGINNINGS: Pretty big day on the graduation scene today. We had the seniors take that last walk as students through BES, earning high fives from future classes. Then we held our Eighth Grade Promotion Ceremony, where we honored the Class of 2029 as they said farewell to junior high. DIGESTED TREASURE: Students in BES' fifth-grade science classes are concluding their bird studies this week by investigating what owls eat - and how they separate the useful stuff from the waste. So when it came time Monday to dissect owl pellets, there were a few wrinkled noses, but the oohs and ahhs were nearly unanimous. As the kids rummaged through the digested skeletal remains of mice, rabbits and other rodents, one of our favorite educational truisms held strong: Science is cool. #GoBeavers

HOOT LOOP: By now, we know the drill at BES. Every year about now as we study our way through bird season, we get a return visit from the owl-expert husband-and-wife team of Joe and Barb Rogers of the Wildlife Recovery Association. As usual, the Rogerses brought several feathered friends with them, along with a ton of owl knowledge for the kids. And as usual, it was flat-out excellent. #WhatAreYouLookingAt

NOT TO BE MISSED: On May 16, get ready for the spring sports collision you didn’t know you needed. But you do. Join us as the BJSHS Soccer and Track & Field teams square off, with action starting at 5 p.m. at Metzger Field. This is most definitely a #GoBeavers situation.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION: Now that nice weather had shown up two days in a row (!), it made for the perfect setting for the annual Fifth-Grade Track & Field Day at Metzger Field today. In addition to the hometown Beavers, the event showcased the talents of fifth-graders from Farwell, Harrison, Clare and Gladwin in a crazy variety of challenges, from the traditional dashes and relays to atypical entries like the obstacle course, the football throw and rope jumping. The common thread in all the events was F-U-N, and the support and sportsmanship among athletes and fans made it an excellent day. #GoBeavers

IT'S GO TIME: When you vote on the CTE Millage renewal request Tuesday, please remember a couple things. First: The renewal request is just that - a RENEWAL. That means passage won't increase your taxes - not one bit. Second: This year, thanks to CTE, 42 percent of Beaverton juniors and seniors are getting hands-on, real-world training in one of 11 skilled trades or occupations that produce extremely employable young adults for industries throughout our community. Third: Since the CTE millage was first approved by voters in 2016, more than 500 Beaverton students have been served in the program, launching careers and flooding the local workforce with trained, experienced ready-to-work employees. THERE SHE GOES: It was a bittersweet scene Thursday afternoon as students and staff lined the halls to bid farewell to Candy Fischer, who said goodbye to Beaverton Schools after more than 30 years of service. Candy affected the lives of innumerable kids in her time with us, including as a recess aide, special and general education paraprofessional and school secretary. Students knew her as a friend and a confidant - somebody they could really talk to. Our loss certainly is Clare-Gladwin RESD's gain as she begins her next chapter as the Special Education Department Secretary. Thanks for everything, Mrs. Fischer; you're already missed. But we know in your heart, it's #BeavertonAlways.
