OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS: The Beaverton Schools Board of Education is seeking a candidate to replace Vice-President Jason Pahl, who resigned August 12.

Interested individuals must be at least 18 years old; a resident of and a registered voter in the Beaverton school district; and willing to finish a term that runs through the end of 2026. Those candidates should submit a letter of interest by 5 p.m. on Sept. 5 to Superintendent Michael Hugan at mhugan@beavertonschools.net or 468 S. Ross St., Beaverton, MI, 48612. Applicants will be given five minutes each to explain their desire to serve at the board’s meeting on Sept. 8. The board will then deliberate and appoint its newest member at that same meeting.

Pahl joined the board in 2021 as an appointee to fill a vacancy and was elected to return in 2022. He also serves as vice-president on the Clare-Gladwin Regional Education Service District Board of Education; he will continue in that capacity. Zdrojewski said the board appreciates his service in both roles.

“Jason answered the bell when we really needed him in 2021,” Zdrojewski said. “We’re all grateful for the time and talent he has given to Beaverton Schools, and we wish him well going forward.”

A GREAT IDEA, PERIOD. We can't say for sure, but it's a pretty safe bet that no other district around here has a wall-sized interactive periodic table, complete with samples of each element. (Minus the radioactive ones, of course.) When the Midland Center for the Arts was repurposing some of the cool exhibits we've all seen there over the years, BJSHS Science Teacher and Element Obsessive Erica Sprague snatched it up on the cheap. Community members then rallied to fund the cost of installation, and here we go. Sixth-graders got an early look at it Monday during orientation, and the rest of the student body and parents can check it out during the K-12 Open House Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. And yes, it's hands-on. #GoBeavers #ItsElementary

CROCKETT IS CLOSED: Parents and students visiting BJSHS today for sixth-grade orientation, practices or anything else, please be advised that Crockett Road is under construction and all visitors should use the M-18 entrance near the Central Office. Also, please be advised that phones in the district are currently down.

ONE LAST REMINDER: School starts for students Mon., Aug. 18 with a half-day, but there’s plenty going on around here before that fateful day, including:

  • Sixth-grade orientation, set for Mon., Aug. 11 from 10:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Seventh-grade mentors will be on hand to help sixth-graders get acclimated to the new building and faces. Lunch will be provided. A special open-house for parents will be held at noon in the media center; parents may then stick around to pick up their kids.

  • Additionally, the K-12 Open House will be held at both buildings Wed., Aug. 13 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., giving all students the opportunity to pick up schedules, figure out the lay of the land and meet their teachers.

  • For parents wondering what supplies their students may need, see the lists below from BES and grades 6-8. The most important item for high school students will be their school-issued Chromebook, which they will receive at the open house or on the first day of school.

  • As always, any donations of tissues, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, paper towels and adhesive bandages will be gratefully accepted for all grades.

THERE’S STILL TIME: The window for application closes Thursday, but if your company and/or your family love and support Beaverton Schools Athletics but you find yourself bombarded by requests to contribute financially multiple times year-round, this is your solution and our promise: If you join us as one of our partner sponsors as outlined below, IT’S THE ONLY TIME YOU’LL BE ASKED BY A BEAVERTON ATHLETICS-AFFILIATED COACH OR STUDENT-ATHLETE FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS. It’s a win for your organization (or you as an individual) because you can support our kids in a highly-visible and effective advertised way, and it’s a win for our athletic department and teams because we’ll spend much less time in the fundraising business. AND WE WON’T ASK YOU AGAIN FOR TWO YEARS. You can get all the details at www.beavertonschools.net/sponsorships or sign up while there are still spots at https://tinyurl.com/339anhn9. The deadline for this opportunity is July 31. Thanks for your past support and consideration of this initiative, and #GoBeavers.

A WAY FORWARD: A committed group of community members, staff and students have been working diligently for several months on a blueprint for the district’s future, and on June 9, the board of education formally adopted the Beaverton Schools Strategic Plan. At the heart of the plan is the district’s renewed commitment to transparency and accountability. To that end, a new page has been created on the district website to help visitors more easily locate information about budgets, policies, the board, communications and more. Head over to www.beavertonschools.net/transparency-hq to see what it’s all about. #GoBeavers

A FAIR FIELD AND NO FAVOR: The BES PTO does great work for our school year-round, but the annual PTO Spring Field Day is a direct, bright, loud reminder of its impact. Today, BES kids took over Metzger Field with running, jumping and seemingly every fun activity you could imagine. Make no mistake: We have no shortage of fun from August through May, but nothing inspires more smiles than this special day. #ThankYouPTO #GoBeavers

ENDINGS...AND BEGINNINGS: Pretty big day on the graduation scene today. We had the seniors take that last walk as students through BES, earning high fives from future classes. Then we held our Eighth Grade Promotion Ceremony, where we honored the Class of 2029 as they said farewell to junior high. You can view the Senior Walk at https://bit.ly/44NheZF and the Eighth-Grade Promotion Ceremony at https://bit.ly/43skHdR; be advised that there is no audio until the program begins. DIGESTED TREASURE: Students in BES' fifth-grade science classes are concluding their bird studies this week by investigating what owls eat - and how they separate the useful stuff from the waste. So when it came time Monday to dissect owl pellets, there were a few wrinkled noses, but the oohs and ahhs were nearly unanimous. As the kids rummaged through the digested skeletal remains of mice, rabbits and other rodents, one of our favorite educational truisms held strong: Science is cool. #GoBeavers

HOOT LOOP: By now, we know the drill at BES. Every year about now as we study our way through bird season, we get a return visit from the owl-expert husband-and-wife team of Joe and Barb Rogers of the Wildlife Recovery Association. As usual, the Rogerses brought several feathered friends with them, along with a ton of owl knowledge for the kids. And as usual, it was flat-out excellent. #WhatAreYouLookingAt

PHYSICAL EDUCATION: Now that nice weather had shown up two days in a row (!), it made for the perfect setting for the annual Fifth-Grade Track & Field Day at Metzger Field today. In addition to the hometown Beavers, the event showcased the talents of fifth-graders from Farwell, Harrison, Clare and Gladwin in a crazy variety of challenges, from the traditional dashes and relays to atypical entries like the obstacle course, the football throw and rope jumping. The common thread in all the events was F-U-N, and the support and sportsmanship among athletes and fans made it an excellent day. #GoBeavers
