TEACHING THE TEACHERS: Students return to class Monday, but teachers, paraprofessionals and administrators have been hard at it all week getting ready. Today, they underwent an all-day professional development session as part of their ongoing training in Restorative Practices, which addresses student behavior by identifying and fulfilling needs; building and repairing relationships; and truly understanding the root causes of adverse behaviors and developing strategies to change them. Today's speaker, Kelvin Oliver, is a renowned expert in the field of Restorative Practices, and he left our staff impressed. "As a staff, we are keenly aware that student behavior is crucial in making our school the best it can be," said BES Principal Shawna Hartwell. "Today's session - and Mr. Oliver's excellent presentation - is another important step in our ongoing progress toward that goal."

BEFORE YOU KNOW IT: Get ready to get the new school year rolling by joining us for a couple key events before school officially starts. First up is the orientation for incoming sixth- and seventh-graders, set for Monday, Aug. 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at BJSHS. Then on Wednesday, Aug. 14, kids and families in grades K-12 are invited to the campus-wide Open House from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Finally, it all kicks off for real on Monday, Aug. 19 with the first day of school, which is a half-day. SCHOOLS OF CHOICE: Under the Schools of Choice legislation (Section 105 and Section 105(c) of the School Aid Act), kindergarten through twelfth grade students residing within Clare Gladwin Regional Education Service District (RESD) and contiguous intermediate school districts, may apply to Beaverton Schools for enrollment for the first semester of the 2024-2025 school year. Application may be made for all grades with unlimited openings. Transportation for these students is the responsibility of the parents or guardians. Enrollment must be made to the school district no later than the end of the first week of school.
THE SHORT LIST: Attention, BES Parents and Students: Thanks to some creative resource management by BES staff with grant funding, we are not asking families to provide classroom supplies this year. Of course, we will always gratefully accept donations of items like tissues, disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, paper towels and adhesive bandages. But in terms of what to bring, all we ask from parents is that their children show up at school with a backpack, a water bottle and a smile - healthy and rested and ready to learn. READY OR NOT: Heads up, students in Grades 6, 7 and 8! School starts Aug. 19, and here’s a list of recommended items you should bring. One spiral notebook and one folder in each of these colors: red (ELA), yellow (Math), blue (Social Studies), green (Science) and orange (Elective); Sharpened #2 pencils; One pack of sharpened colored pencils; Highlighters; One pack of sticky notes; One glue stick; One three-ring binder to hold folders and notebooks; One pencil pouch to put in three-ring binder to hold pencils, colored pencils, highlighters, sticky notes, etc. Each student will be issued a 13” Chromebook and charger; they will be required to properly care for their computer and keep it charged. A case will not be provided with this device. Teachers always appreciate donations of tissues, whiteboard markers and disinfectant wipes. #GoBeavers
Greetings! I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the parents, guardians, students, and community members of Beaverton Schools. My name is Michael Hugan, and I am grateful and humbled to have been chosen by the Board of Education to lead our schools. It is evident that this community cares about its students and values their continued education and enrichment.
I have been an educator for approximately thirty years in various capacities both in teaching and administration. My wife is also an educator of thirty or more years. We both look forward to meeting you all at various school events, but I am also available most days in our administration building. Please feel free to stop by and make an appoint to meet with me.
I am looking forward to continuing a tradition of success in Beaverton Schools. In fact, it is my intent for Beaverton Schools to become the premier school district in our region. I look to you all for ideas, encouragement, and participation in accomplishing this goal!

A NEW LEADER: Michael Hugan has been selected as Beaverton Schools' new superintendent following a thorough three-month search process. The district’s board of education made it official at its meeting Monday with a unanimous vote approving Hugan’s hire. More details at beavertonschools.net. #GoBeavers
ROUND TWO: The Beaverton Schools Board of Education conducted interviews of four finalists for its superintendent position Monday and Tuesday this week, and two of those candidates will be brought back for second interviews on Monday, June 17. Michael Hugan will speak with the board from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m., followed by Jennifer Thrush from 5 to 6 p.m. These meetings, held at the BJSHS Media Center, are open to the public.

Visitors should enter campus through either the Tonkin Street entrance or the driveway next to the central office and park in the areas designated in YELLOW below.
